My heart ached as I watched the river rise in front of my college roommate’s house in Damascus, Virginia. What was once a peaceful stream had become a roaring river that engulfed her yard and flooded her cellar. Although her house survived, her business didn’t, and many of her neighbors lost their homes entirely as they were swept away.
In the days after Hurricane Helene ravaged western North Carolina and Virginia, help arrived. Friends shared photos of volunteers showing up in droves, clearing debris and distributing food. It was like salve to a wound—bringing hope for healing when it seemed out of reach. These stories are just one of thousands that we’ll hear in the weeks and months ahead as these communities begin to rebuild.
The destruction across western North Carolina has been heartbreaking. Roads and bridges were washed away by the 30 inches of rain that fell, leaving many of the most vulnerable residents isolated, cut off from help, medicine, food, and rescue. But the spirit of the High Country—the determination and willingness to help one another—ensures that these communities will rise again, stronger than ever.
I’ve been deeply moved by the acts of kindness and unity, watching neighbors and strangers alike come together to dig out from the destruction. People have offered not just their physical labor but also their encouragement, food, and time. What seemed like an insurmountable task has become possible through teamwork and community support.
This Thanksgiving, I’m especially thankful for the strength of our communities. I am grateful for those who, in times of crisis, offer compassion and lend a hand to those in need. As we reflect on our own blessings, I encourage everyone to continue lifting up our neighbors in western North Carolina by donating money, time, resources, and hope. Together, we can help these communities heal and come back stronger.
