From Rock Hill Roots to Lake Norman Leadership
I was born and raised in Rock Hill, South Carolina, graduating from Winthrop University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Management, and I’m a proud dad to an Old English Sheepdog named Henry. In January 1996, I was hired to lead our chamber of commerce with 850 plus business members in the Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Mooresville, and greater Lake Norman region.
Staying Grounded and Having Fun
While I reside in Huntersville during the week, I typically head down to Rock Hill to our family farm (which dates back to 1769) on the weekends. There I watch the cattle grazing on the tall grass, saddle up on Duke our quarter horse or Traveler our Tennessee Walker, and work in the garden I plant each spring. I also love to travel! I was President of the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1992-1993 and traveled to 47 states and seven countries representing America’s largest young professionals organization in the nation.
Keeping Up With Growth
Many of our challenges come from the unprecedented growth we have experienced but they are a byproduct of our success. It’s also important to keep your focus. Your organization cannot do everything for everybody. So, find your strengths and play to them.
Attitude of Gratitude
People may ask, “How do you handle a “Bad Day?” I’m not sure there is a “bad day” at Lake Norman but knowing the sun will rise again tomorrow keeps me smiling and grateful. Every new day presents a new opportunity. I try to learn from any bad experience and then move on. It’s important in life to slow down and appreciate the moment. Like the Alabama song from the 90’s, “I’m in a hurry and don’t know why… .” Sometimes you simply need to slow down and enjoy the ride you are on before it comes to a stop—and make no mistake, it will come to a stop so it’s important to enjoy the journey.
