What began as a passion for helping people create homes they truly love has grown into one of Lake Norman’s most distinctive design destinations. Through Knotty and Board’s Davidson Décor & Gift Boutique and Langtree’s Knotty and Board Furniture Market, owner Michael Fournier and wife Kim Hankins have built a business centered on thoughtful design, personal relationships, and the belief that a home should reflect the people who live there. Rather than focusing solely on furniture or décor, they have created an experience that blends inspiration, functionality, and expert guidance. “We wanted to create a place where people felt comfortable exploring ideas and discovering their style,” Michael smiles. “Home should feel personal, and every decision we make starts with helping clients achieve that.”
Creativity, Determination, and Faith
Building a business that combines retail, furniture, gifts, and interior design services meant thinking beyond traditional retail models; and like many entrepreneurs, Michael’s journey required equal parts creativity, determination, and faith. Over time, he and Kim developed a concept that allows customers to shop for a single accessory, furnish an entire room, or work with designers on a full-home transformation. “We’ve always believed people deserve more than a transaction,” he says. “They deserve someone who listens, understands their needs, and helps them create a space they’ll enjoy every day.”
Two Stores, One Purpose
One of the qualities that sets Knotty & Board apart is its unique two-location model. The Davidson location offers a curated collection of décor, gifts, and boutique finds as well as local vendors who sell their products on the 2nd floor of the Davidson store, while the larger Mooresville showroom provides an immersive furniture and design experience. Together, the locations serve different needs while sharing the same design philosophy: “Each store has its own personality, but both are focused on helping customers find pieces that feel authentic to them,” he explains. “We also offer interior design services, assisting homeowners with everything from room refreshes to new construction projects. That combination of retail and design expertise allows clients to receive personalized guidance rather than one-size-fits-all recommendations.”
Turning Houses Into Homes
For Michael, success isn’t measured simply by sales or square footage but by the relationships built and the homes transformed along the way. He believes the most meaningful spaces are those that tell a story and reflect the lives unfolding within them. “The best compliment we can receive is when someone walks into a room and says, ‘This feels like me’ … that really hits home and shows our commitment to listening and successfully collaborating with our clients.
