From June through August, laughter and creativity fill the clubhouse and grounds at Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club in Cornelius as children gather for one of the club’s most beloved traditions: The Summer Kids Program. Offered four days a week, the program welcomes members’ children and prospective families for a season packed with themed activities, games, crafts, and unforgettable summer fun.

At the heart of the program is Katherine Armitage, Club & Kids Program Manager, who has led the program for years with passion, imagination, and a deep love for working with children. Her hands-on approach and personal connection with each child are what transform the program from a summer schedule into a true community experience.

“My favorite part of this program is watching the kids grow more confident and creative every summer,” Katherine shares. “It’s amazing to see friendships form and personalities shine when they feel safe, supported, and encouraged.”

Each week of the Summer Kids Program brings a new theme, keeping activities fresh and exciting while inspiring curiosity and teamwork. From outdoor adventures and water fun to arts and crafts and group games, the program reflects the yacht club’s family-focused spirit.

For parents, the program offers peace of mind as well as joy — knowing their children are spending summer days in a welcoming environment led by someone who truly understands kids and cares about their development.

“We try to create a place where kids feel like this is their second home,” Katherine explains. “I want them to come in excited every morning and leave feeling proud of what they created or learned that day.”

Katherine’s long-term leadership has allowed her to build meaningful relationships with families year after year. Many children return each summer, growing up alongside the program and forming bonds that extend beyond the season.

“Seeing kids come back summer after summer is incredibly special,” she says. “You really get to know them — their interests, their strengths, and what makes them smile.”

The Summer Kids Program has also become an important part of the club’s appeal to prospective members, highlighting the club’s commitment to family life and community connection. “This program isn’t just about keeping kids busy, it’s about creating memories and building a sense of belonging,” Katherine adds.

As summer unfolds, the program continues to be a place where children feel inspired, friendships flourish, and families experience the heart of what makes Safe Harbor Peninsula Yacht Club so special.
