A healthy white smile is one of the most attractive features in our society today. It can boost confidence and encourage healthy maintenance habits. Over time, teeth naturally yellow due to age and eating and drinking habits. Patients often ask about teeth-whitening options to brighten their smile, and there are several factors to consider.

Who can whiten their teeth?
When done correctly, teeth-whitening is safe and effective for anyone with healthy adult teeth. It does not damage tooth enamel and carries very few long-term risks. However, crowns and fillings will not whiten, and teeth with cavities or unhealthy gums should be treated before whitening. Most dentists recommend waiting until at least age 14, as younger teeth are still developing and may be more sensitive. Pregnant and nursing women should also avoid whitening because the effects of swallowed whitening agents on a fetus or infant are unknown.

How does it work?
The most effective whitening products contain hydrogen or carbamide peroxide, which penetrates tooth enamel and dissolves stain molecules within the dentin layer, producing whiter teeth. Some temporary sensitivity is normal, but when used as directed, whitening does not harm tooth structure. Prolonged contact with gum tissue should be avoided, as it can cause temporary soreness and inflammation.

What are my options?

  • Whitening Toothpaste
Whitening toothpastes remove surface stains caused by foods, coffee, tea, wine, or smoking. They contain abrasives and stain-removing agents, such as baking soda, but do not change the natural color of the tooth itself.
  • Over-the-Counter Whitening Strips and Gels
Drugstore whitening products contain lower concentrations of peroxide than professional treatments. Gels are applied with one-size-fits-all trays, strips, or paint-on formulas, which may allow excess gel to irritate the gums. However, these milder products can be a good starting point for people with sensitive teeth.
  • Professional At-Home Whitening
Dentists can provide custom-fitted trays and stronger whitening gels for at-home use. The trays provide a better fit and more effective results, typically requiring about an hour of wear each day for one to two weeks. The trays are reusable with refill whitening gel as needed.
  • In-Office Whitening
Professional in-office whitening provides the fastest results. Although it costs more, many patients appreciate the convenience of a single visit. A higher-strength whitening agent is applied directly to the teeth and activated with a heat or light source. Custom trays are often included to help maintain results.
