On Saturday, March 8, we celebrate International Women’s Day—a day to recognize the strength, resilience, and achievements of women worldwide. At the heart of this vision is the next generation—young women and girls—who will lead the charge toward lasting change.

This year also marks a pivotal milestone: the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. This groundbreaking document redefined women’s rights, setting the stage for legal protections, youth engagement, and a shift away from outdated social norms. But our work isn’t done. Change requires all of us—leaders, businesses, communities, and individuals—to take action and create a future where no one is left behind.

Celebrating International Women’s Day: A Tribute to the Women Who Inspire Me

by: Mamie Lee

While we celebrate women around the world, I can’t help but reflect on the remarkable women in my own life who have shaped me into the woman I am today.

My Mother
Raised in the North Carolina High Country, my mother had the grit of the mountain women before her—strong, resourceful, and resilient. Yet, she embodied the epitome of Southern hospitality, proving that you can be both tough and kind. She always taught me, “You can have it all—just not all at the same time.” A lesson that has carried me through life’s seasons.

My Sisters
Each of us is unique, yet we share an unbreakable bond. Like our mother and her three sisters before us, we prioritize sisterhood, carving out time for our cherished “sister weekends.” Even in the midst of busy careers and family life, we make sure to show up for each other.

My Daughter
Becoming a mother to a daughter made me even prouder to be a woman. Watching her grow into a young adult, stepping into the world as a college freshman, fills me with joy and pride. Seeing her create her own friendships and community is beautiful, and while it’s heartbreaking to watch her face challenges, I know that every struggle will shape her into a stronger, more resilient woman.

The Ladies of Lake Norman Woman Magazine
This magazine is more than a publication—it’s a heart project every single month. The women I work with have embraced me, taught me, and inspired me with their passion and dedication. Together, we celebrate and uplift the incredible women of our community, telling their stories with the care and respect they deserve.

And So Many More…
From my aunts and cousins to my college friends, my Cornelius crew, and the extraordinary women who trust Lake Norman Woman to share their stories, I am surrounded by strength and inspiration every single day. I can only hope to inspire them as much as they inspire me.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let’s continue to lift each other up, advocate for equality, and create a world where all women and girls can thrive.

“Here’s to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.” – Unknown
