March is a month full of celebration for Girl Scouts, marking both Girl Scouts Week and the organization’s birthday. Since 1912, when Juliette Gordon Low founded Girl Scouts in Savannah, Georgia, girls have been encouraged to explore new experiences, develop leadership skills, and make meaningful contributions to their communities. Over a century later, Girl Scouts continues to inspire girls to dream big, take initiative, and leave a positive mark on the world. March is the perfect time to honor those who are carrying that mission forward, and this year, three local girls are doing just that.
Girl Scouts Hornets’ Nest Council recently recognized Troop 3270 members Caroline K., Sophia B., and Zoe H. with the Girl Scout Silver Award—the highest honor a Cadette can earn. The Silver Award highlights the girls’ achievements in Girl Scouting and their dedication to bettering their community. By earning this award, Caroline, Sophia, and Zoe have stepped into the role of young leaders, showing courage, creativity, and a commitment to making a difference.
Their project focused on creating a Kids’ Corner for Heartstrings Therapeutic Music and Art at Children’s Hope Alliance in Statesville. Heartstrings offers free educational, therapeutic, and experimental art and music classes to children in at-risk families, giving them a safe space to learn, grow, and express themselves. Caroline, Sophia, and Zoe collected more than 750 books, games, coloring books, and puzzles, and furnished the space with rugs, bean bags, a small table and chairs, and bookcases, turning it into a cozy, inviting environment for kids of all ages. Many items were donated, and the girls raised most of the $1,400 project total by selling Girl Scout cookies—a sweet example of their dedication paying off.
Paula Miller, Heartstrings program manager, shared, “The space the Girl Scouts created has already provided kids and their siblings with fun ways to interact with others and entertain themselves. This has been a huge blessing to our families. Thank you, Caroline, Sophia, and Zoe, for your hard work in creating a space for them!”
Through their creativity, leadership, and generosity, Caroline, Sophia, and Zoe embody the very spirit of Girl Scouts. Their work reminds us that Girl Scouting isn’t just about badges and cookies; it’s about building confidence, making friends, and leaving a lasting, positive impact on the world. This March, as we celebrate the birthday of Girl Scouts, these young women shine as a perfect example of the next generation of leaders ready to make a difference.
