A Mother’s Heart: Celebrating Every Kind of Mom This Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a time to honor the women who raise us, love us, and shape us—but motherhood is so much more than biology. Some women carry children, and some carry dreams, burdens, and hopes for others. Some nurture through packed lunches and bedtime stories, while others nurture through advice, encouragement, or simply showing up when it matters most.

At Lake Norman Woman, we believe that every woman who gives her heart to care for others deserves to be celebrated—whether you’re a mom in the traditional sense, a mentor, a teacher, a pet parent, or the “go-to” woman in your circle who always seems to know just what to say.

Our editor and production manager, Leslie, is one of those women. A mentor to our entire staff, she reminds us that the power of a mentoring mindset is transformational. As she once wrote, “Mentors write on the slate of who we are and who we are to become.” The impact of a woman who believes in you—who listens, guides, and encourages—is lifelong.

Mentors, like mothers, bring light to dark places. They help others grow through patience, empathy, flexibility, and most of all—love. And the beauty of mentoring is that it works both ways. Women who mentor others often find just as much healing, clarity, and growth in the process.

So today, we want to honor every kind of mother:

  • To the pet moms who love unconditionally and give their furry friends a home and a heart
  • To the women who step in as second moms, bonus moms, or the best aunties ever
  • To the teachers, coaches, and mentors who show up, speak life, and lead by example
  • To the mothers who have endured loss or are longing to be mothers—we see you and hold space for you
  • And to every woman nurturing a child, a dream, a friend, or a community—you are making the world better, one act of love at a time

This Mother’s Day, may we celebrate not just motherhood, but mothering—the beautiful, powerful art of lifting others up with love.

As Maya Angelou so perfectly wrote:
“It’s in the reach of my arms, the span of my hips,
The stride of my step, the curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.”
