On October 25th, independent bookstore Main Street Books of Davidson, NC will host an event to celebrate the release of middle grade novel Fooled by local authors and disability advocates Susan and Lexi Haas. The event will include a performance by Charlotte-based disability-inclusive dance group Expand Movement, as well as a discussion of the book between the authors and Camerin Watson, director of Expand Movement.

This event will take place in the gymnasium of Davidson Elementary School, 635 South St, Davidson, NC, and from 4-5pm on October 25th 2025. There is no cost to attend, but RSVP is strongly encouraged. The authors will sign books following the event. Copies of Fooled will be available to purchase at the event courtesy of Main Street Books.

“We are so excited about the opportunity to promote Susan and Lexi’s new book for young readers,” said Adah Fitzgerald, owner of Main Street Books. “The book celebrates the magic of community and the power of disabled folks to create necessary change.”

Fooled tells the story of Lil Evers, a sixth grader with cerebral palsy whose narrow escape from bullies sparks rumors of her magical abilities. Along with her friends Dora and Scoot, Lil stands up to ableism in the school administration. Susan and Lexi Haas, a mother-daughter author duo, draw on Lexi’s experience as a person with cerebral palsy to write this nuanced story with themes of friendship, courage, and hope. Fooled is forthcoming from Little, Brown on October 21, 2025.

RSVP to the event to attend.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS Susan and Lexi Haas are a mother and daughter writing team focusing on disability education and advocacy and the authors of The Year of the Buttered Cat, a Junior Library Guild gold standard selection. Lexi has a rare and severe form of cerebral palsy. While she can’t walk or talk, she was reading by ten months old, has an impressive memory, a keen sense of humor, and an invincible spirit. Recognizing her young daughter’s gift for words, Susan began writing with Lexi to help foster independence and develop communication, but soon learned that Lexi’s fresh perspective needed to be shared with others. In addition to writing together, Susan and Lexi also enjoy presenting to schools and organizations around the world, helping others learn about disability from a first-person narrative. They live in Charlotte, NC.

ABOUT THE CONVERSATION PARTNER Camerin Watson is the director of Expand Movement, a dance program for dancers with and without disabilities whose mission is to bring all bodies together in movement with an understanding that we all have beautiful moves to share on the dance floor. Camerin received her BFA in dance from UNC Greensboro. Since, she has taught dance to all ages, levels and abilities. Watson received her Adaptive Dance Certification from Boston Ballet in 2018, but she has been passionate about working with dances with disabilities her whole life. Camerin’s brother Corbin is an amazing musician with disabilities and has always been a great source of inspiration and support. In addition to teaching, Camerin is a freelance choreographer, performer and the Artistic Director of Charlotte’s annual BOOM Festival.
